Gaetano
Conte Academy
The
Gaetano Conte Academy was founded in 1989 and has been constitued
in Naples
for the promotion of scientific research on primary myopathies
and cardiomyopathies. The Academy is dedicated to the Napolitan
physician Gaetano Conte who, in 1836 - 32 years prior to
Duchenne - first described two cases of pseudohypertrophic
progressive muscular dystrophy in which he also found the
presence of cardiac involvement. Every two years the Academy
confers three 'Gaetano Conte Awards' to the scholars who
have recently published papers of high scientific level
in the field of muscular dystrophies, concerning basic research,
clinical research and social aspects. The 1997 ceremony
of the G. Conte prizes awarding was held in Nicosia during
the 3rd Congress of the Mediterranean Society of Myology.
